The island has been used as a field lab for the use of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source. Goeree-Overflakkee has an outstanding reputation in various sustainability areas and is a sustainable holiday destination. The island has received the QualityCoast Platinum Award. The Blue Flag flies in many marinas and beaches, which represents clean and safe (swimming) water, beautiful nature, good sanitation and a healthy environment. Goeree-Overflakkee’s beach was even declared the cleanest beach of Holland in 2019. They have even been rewarded with the “Best of Nature” in 2019 at the ITB Berlin,  the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show.

Discover the flora & fauna Due to the influence of both fresh and sea salt water, you can find here a huge variety of birds and plants, such as orchids and parnassia. In the Flakkee polder landscape you can spot wild fjord horses; beavers can be found near the beach of Den Bommel and seals in Bollen van de Ooster. Not enough yet? Every year, from mid-October to April, a group of flamingos hibernate in the Grevelingenmeer (lake) near Battenoord.
Tij, bird observatory Situated in the nature reserve Scheelhoek (Deltahaven 69, Stellendam). It has the shape of an egg from the large stern and offers a fantastic view of the delta nature of the Haringvliet. From here you will spot among other things big terns, spoonbills and shelducks. Visit authentic villages as Goedereede at the top of the island or the fishing village of Middelharnis. Then go to Sommelsdijk to drink a beer at the local beer brewery Solaes and visit the Regional Museum.
De mèkkerstee Experience the farm life at the organic goat farm De Mèkkerstee, in Ouddorp. See how lovely they are taking care of their goats and get to know the other animals on the children's farm. In the cheese factory you can also see how cheese is made.
