Kuldiga, the immaculately preserved medieval town

An immaculately preserved medieval town, Kuldiga is one of the most picturesque spots in Latvia – and it's all the more picturesque for being almost completely undiscovered by the tourist hordes. Often called the ‘Venice of Latvia’ for its location on the sparkling river Venta, this idyllic town boasts ancient castles, churches, mills and bridges. In the spring, the Venta waterfall, the widest in Europe, is enlivened by thousands of leaping fish returning to spawn, while the nearby Alekšupīte waterfall is the highest in the country. The surrounding countryside, chockablock with farms producing traditional goods, is also a fantastic place to strap on hiking boots or swing into the bike saddle for fresh air and charming views.
