The Green Destination Rating (GDR) is a methodology for the assessment of the sustainability of destinations and is primarily based on neutral sources like databases, maps and internet sources. The database that underlies the GRD contains information based on more than 20 indicators of around 1.000 destinations. BookDifferent integrated the GDR on her booking website.

The GDR rates the results of the sustainability policies that tourists can and do see and experience in practice. A large survey was initially used to understand what tourists would expect in a “sustainable destination” and then the initial GDR was created, assessing destinations through visitors’ eyes and based on:

  • Data from local, regional and national authorities: ca. 50%.
  • Data collected from Google Earth, Google Maps and GIS ca. 40%.
  • Visitor reviews and Expert assessments: ca. 10%.

And there you have it – a review based on sustainable tourism through visitor’s eyes. In fact sustainable tourism from principle to practice!

The aim is to encourage destinations to give more attention to the various aspects of tourism sustainability in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources. Not only does the GDR serves as guiding principles for destinations, it also informs tour operators, holidaymakers and travellers about this important subject. The GDR is recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourist Council.
