Green Destinations is a non-profit network organisation that evaluates, recognises and certifies sustainability and quality of tourist destinations worldwide. Destinations can apply for recognition through Sustainable Top 100 nomination, QualityCoast Awards or Green Destinations Certification*.
Destinations (municipalities, regions, counties, protected areas or private estates) applying for recognition have to report on ca. 100 criteria and 60 indicators covering the following sustainability themes;
- Destination Management
- Nature, Animals & Scenery
- Environment & Climate
- Culture & Tradition
- Social Well-Being
- Business & Hospitality
The recognition program includes the following options:
Sustainable Destinations Top 100
Destinations can be nominated for free to the yearly Top 100 competition which requires reporting on 30 core criteria of the Green Destinations Standard and completing the GD indicator report. Each year at ITB Berlin, the ‘Best of Top 100’ destinations are selected based on their submitted good practice case studies. More information: http://sustainabletop100.org
Green Destinations Award & Certification Program
The QualityCoast and Green Destinations Awards are pre-certification recognition of progress towards full compliance with the Green Destinations Standard – an officially recognised set of requirements to be a ‘sustainable destination’. Awards are issued from Bronze to Platinum indicating increasing levels of ‘compliance’ with the GD standard.
‘Green Destinations Certified’ is recognition of full compliance with the Green Destinations Standard, and follows procedures accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Destinations achieving ‘Certified’ level are subject to a strict evaluation mechanism and enter a very select group of destinations worldwide recognised with GSTC accredited certification.
