Fair Trade Tourism is a non-profit organization promoting best-practice responsible tourism in Africa. Their goal is to grow awareness about responsible tourism in Africa, and to assist tourism businesses to operate more sustainable. They work to accomplish this through their membership and certification programs. The Fair Trade Tourism certification label represents best-practice responsible tourism – defined by fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing and operations, equitable distribution of benefits and respect for human rights, culture and the environment.
Fair Trade Tourism certifies tourism businesses in South Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and has formal recognition agreements with equivalently benchmarked certification programs in Namibia, Seychelles, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania.
For a tourism product to be Fair Trade Tourism certified it must be assessed against the tourism product compliance criteria, which are derived from the Tourism Product Certification Standard. Tourism businesses that want to get certified by Fair Trade Tourism apply for an on-site audit by a professional audit company appointed by Fair Trade Tourism to audit against the Fair Trade Tourism standard. During the on-site audit, auditors will verify compliance with a number of criteria relating to business practices and human resources, community resources, cultural heritage and environmental practices. Once all mandatory areas of compliance have been met (within the required timeframe), the Fair Trade Tourism certification will be awarded.
The criteria are business practice and HR, community resources, cultural heritage and environmental practices.
The Fair Trade Tourism audit process complies with international best practice, as set out by the GSTC.
At De Zeekoe fairness, ethical business practice and environmental respect form the basis for sustainable tourism. Through social upliftment and addressing the needs of the community, De Zeekoe employs and gives housing to 20 families on the farm. They aim to positively raise the standard of living and uplift the local community on an ongoing basis. Generations of our employees and their children have been educated by Zeekoegat Primary.
With this project they hope to address the needs of their community by improving the medical health care and education, by developing hidden talents and keeping children busy through sports and recreation and by improving their current feeding scheme!
