The Khangchendzonga National Park holds an unique diversity of plains, valleys, lakes, glaciers and spectacular, snow-capped mountains covered with ancient forests, including the world’s third highest peak, Mount Khangchendzonga. Mythological stories are associated with this mountain and with a great number of natural elements (caves, rivers, lakes, etc.) that are the object of worship by the indigenous people of Sikkim. The sacred meanings of these stories and practices have been integrated with Buddhist beliefs and constitute the basis for Sikkimese identity.

The park is known for its spectacular wilderness and is home to on the of the worlds’ highest peaks. The highest peak, Mt. Khangchendzonga, is 8586M high and literally means ‘above the gods’! As it is a sustainable destination, we are all exited to learn about their actions. The park works actively on nature and landscape protection and has established strict rules visitors have to follow. The park is dedicated to their Zero Waste Management Project where a partnership between NGO’s and the government led to an initiative to monitor the garbage left behind on the trails by trekkers. Make sure you read their rules before entering!  

Keep your eyes open and spot numerous animals like the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Great Tibetan Sheep, Bharal or Musk deer. Don’t skip the Tholung Monastery. The monastery is located in the most remote part of upper Dzongu, which is one of the most sacred monasteries in Sikkim. The Tashiding Monastery is one you shouldn’t skip, you will be amazed by its attractive architecture and a snowy backdrop of grand mountain peaks.
