Sustainable destination Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Iceland

Picture yourself hiking through a vast landscape of lush fjords, volcanic peaks, impressive sea cliffs, waterfalls, beautiful golden beaches and a sparkling ice cap… An absolute dream for the adventurous traveler! You will find this beautiful scenery on the peninsula Snaefellsnes in Iceland.

Snaefellsnes has been awarded as an EarthCheck Gold Destination, recognized by the GSTC. The island truly is a green destination; 95% of businesses in Stykkisholmur signed up for a ‘no plastic bag’ policy and they ensured that geothermal water, which is heated by mother earth, is used throughout the whole island for heating!

The Snaefellsjokull National Park can be found on the most western part of the island. The parks’ mission is to protect and conserve the area’s unique landscape, domestic plants and animal life as well as the important historical relics. When visiting the national park, you will encounter the mystical Snæfellsjökull glacier; which is primarily known thanks to the novel ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ by Jules Verne! The glacier, which is one of the most beautiful mountains north of Reykjavík, was considered to be a centre of supernatural energy. Gatklettur – Arch Rock – is a cliff with a circular arch. The arch shows how distinctive wave action has eroded the rocks into arches and beautiful swirled patterns.

We are stunned by this Arch Rock. Gatklettur (“Hellnar Arch”) is a famous, naturally formed stone arch found between the villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar. The strange, swirling patterns across the rock itself is a testament to the ocean’s constant barrage and makes for a fascinating photographic subject. Thankfully, Gatklettur is less frequently visited by guests to Iceland, so there is a good chance you’ll have this scenic stop all to yourself!

So, when you are visiting this staggering peninsula don’t forget to book a midnight hike to the top of the glacier! When you are booking, make sure you book it with an eco-tour operator, like gowest.is. They offer a variety of eco tours based on their principles which include travel without compromising nature, local culture, environment or safety.
