Partner-news: the Travel Foundation Annual Review 2017

We are proud to have the Travel Foundation as one of our esteemed partners! Recently they have published their annual review on how they give local communities a voice. Before destinations were wonderful places to visit, they were places other people had established as a home, founding livelihoods and shaping the cultural look and feel of the place in the process. Today, these are the attributes that also create great destinations for tourists to visit. We want to share with you an amazing story from the Travel Foundation.

The Travel Foundation helps local communities make a fair living from tourism. In the popular tourism destination Cancun and Riviera Maya, the rapid growth of visitors has brought a wealth of jobs and business opportunities to the locals. But for some Maya women living in the rural villages, these opportunities have been confined to low paid jobs in the coastal hotels many miles from home. To change this, the Travel Foundation, supported Mayan women to develop small, sustainable enterprises, enabling them to stay in their villages and earn a good income by selling Jungle Jams and honey-based products like shampoos, soaps and lip balms to tourist in the surrounding hotels!

We think this is a clever initiative and a showcase to the world that tourism can be for good. If you are interested in reading and learning more about their great efforts to a sustainable world, read their annual report here. And don’t forget to start your sustainable travel at bookdifferent.com
