Discover the hidden secrets of Mexico!

Yesss! We have a new blog from two of our favorite bloggers; Katie and Ben from Two Wandering Soles. Katie and Ben have been travelling through Central America for some time now and have discovered some real hidden treasures on their travel.

Mexico, what a country! With steaming jungles, snowcapped volcanoes, cactus-strewn deserts and 10,000km of coast strung with sandy beaches and wildlife-rich lagoons, Mexico is an endless adventure for the senses and a place where life is lived largely in the open air. Mexico’s pre-Hispanic civilizations built some of the world’s great archaeological monuments, including Teotihuacán’s towering pyramids and the exquisite Maya temples of Palenque. The Spanish colonial era left beautiful towns full of tree-shaded plazas and richly sculpted stone churches and mansions, while modern Mexico has seen a surge of great art from the likes of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.

But how are they doing on the subject of sustainability? Mexico is Latin America’s largest fossil fuel-consuming country. But, it has the potential to rapidly move towards a low-carbon future. The transportation and mobility components of Mexico City’s Plan Verde (Green Plan) agenda, designed to lead the city towards a state of EcoMobility, was launched in 2007. The plan is based on a multi-component strategy to reduce traffic congestion and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Green Plan emphasizes local action, in particular, through initiatives such as the Hoy No Circula (Today Don’t Drive) and Muevete en Bici (Get on your Bike) programs.

So, over to the stunning Mexico and the discoveries Katie and Ben made while travelling across the country. We especially liked their trek through the Sierra Norte mountains to the eight small autonomous villages. It is a fascinating place as they are not controlled by the government, and the best way to experience these “Pueblos Manucommunandos” is by hiking between them with a local guide. The Sierra Norte region in Oaxaca’s highlands is known for its incredible biodiversity. With an impressive amount of flora and fauna, the inhabitants feel that it’s important to protect their precious land. Spent your days where only a few tourists have ventured, meet the locals who proudly call this place home and give back to their community. A great way to meet and interact with the people living here, is to visit one of their local markets. The largest indigenous market in Latin America is just a 45-minute drive outside of Oaxaca City, in the town of Tlacolula!
