How green is your travel destination?

As a responsible tourist it is important to be informed about the efforts your travel destination has developed towards a green, clean and responsible destination and to be aware of the impact your presence has. Unfortunately, it is hard to know what impact your visit is having on your destination and how you are affecting the environment or the local communities. With the Green Destination Rating (GDR) we have found an easy understandable tool to show you how green and clean your destination is now and in the future. From now on you can now easily contribute to the sustainable development by choosing a green destination.

The Green Destinations Rating (GDR) is a methodology for the assessment of the sustainability of destinations and is primarily based on neutral sources like databases, maps and internet sources. The database that underlies the GDR contains information based on more than 40 indicators of around 1.000 destinations. The GDR is aligned with the standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council Destinations Certification Standards (GSTC-D). We as BookDifferent have fully integrated the GDR on our booking website.

The Green Destination Rating rates the results of the sustainability efforts that tourists can see and experience in practice. A large survey was initially used to understand what tourists would expect in a “sustainable destination” and then the initial GDR was created, assessing destinations through visitors’ eyes and based on:

  • Data from local, regional and national authorities: ca. 50%.
  • Data collected from Google Earth, Google Maps and Statistical databases: ca. 40%.
  • Visitor reviews and Expert assessments: ca. 10%.

And there you have it – a rating based on sustainable tourism through visitor’s eyes. In fact sustainable tourism from principle to practice!

The aim is to encourage destinations to give more attention to the various aspects of tourism sustainability in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources. Not only does the GDR serves as guiding principles for destinations, it also informs tour operators, holidaymakers and travellers about this important subject.

The Green Destinations Rating has been developed by our partner Green Destinations, do you want to know more about the tool or their way of working or, check their website.
