In 1847, native St Andrews architect George Rae designed the buildings on Playfair Terrace. The Ardgowan Hotel and Playfair’s Restaurant were born from the two houses situated at the end of the terrace!
The Ardgowan Hotel and Playfair’s Restaurant was bought by the McLachlan family in 2003 and was run by Roy and Eliza McLachlan along with Gary Foster, transforming the hotel from a 12 bedroom to a 36 bedroom business with a well-known restaurant.
Nearing retirement Roy and Eliza were delighted when in 2012, son Duncan decided he would like to join the business, heading up ‘Playfair’s Army’ in the kitchen as Head Chef. Then, in 2014 daughter Rachel also joined as Director of Marketing and Business Development rounding off the second generation of McLachlan’s running the business.
Ardgowan Hotel is a traditional Georgian townhouse offering spacious rooms, Scottish cuisine and free WiFi throughout. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is just a 2-minute walk away. The refurbished en suite bedrooms at Ardgowan Hotel have cosy, traditional decor. Rooms have a TV, tea/coffee facilities and Wi-Fi access. 7 en suite rooms are located directly next door at the Pilmour Hotel, however guest should check-in at the Ardgowan. Playfair's Restaurant and Steakhouse serves fresh local produce in their intimate restaurant which also has an outdoor terrace. In addition to the restaurant, Playfair's Bar is located in the annexe. It serves bar food and drinks daily (bar opened seasonally). The Ardgowan is only a short stroll to St Andrews’ famous Old Course. There is free public parking close by.

Your check-in, check-out and breakfast are in the Ardgowan Hotel. However, Pilmour rooms are located in Pilmour Hotel which is directly next door.
Cars may be parked free outside the hotel after 17:00 until 09:00 the next morning and all day on Sunday.
